Firing a Cannon - Fort Matanzas National Monument

Held in the historic City of St. Augustine, Florida
on Saturday, May 4, 2013

"Was that some freaky day, or what?" The statement made by Jenna, the young daughter of one of our guests from the Jaguar Car Club of Florida accurately summed up the day. The event did not go as 'scripted', the 'freaky monster' (aka the weather) toyed with us all day: A violent storm as cars assembled on the show field through to a National Weather Center tornado warning and the resulting storm cutting the power at the awards banquet. Show day comprised the execution of contingency plans A through E to make the show a most exciting and memorable event

The day started dry with the cars commencing to assemble on the show field. Early arrivals washed down and polished their cars. However after thirty minutes a rain storm did the heavy lifting and gave the cars a thorough wash-down. Time to exercise Plan B: The cars scurried off to the City multi-story parking lot adjacent to the show field

The City decided they did not want fully paid up interlopers hanging around in their lot and promptly called the local police to evict us. A short judging session was sneaked in before final eviction under the pretense of checking engines of cars that 'would not start'. We then moved on to Plan C: Some trailered vehicle owners wanted to brave the show field prior to reloading the cars into their trailers. A short wild and wet judging session was held on the show field and the remainder of the cars enjoyed a club 'fun run' back to the Comfort Inn and Suites, our designated hotel. Plan D: The hotel management kindly allowed us to judge the cars in the dry under the hotel entry porch

With the judging under our belt we were off to the awards banquet at the King & Bear in World Golf Village. All guests were seated, plates filled with the fabulous food served up at the buffet and then the 'freaky monster' struck again. Unknown to the assembly the National Weather Center had broadcast a tornado warning for St. Johns County, World Golf Village. We were entertained by a violent storm for a few minutes and then 'whoosh', out went the lights. The King and Bear staff reacted quickly and we ate our meals by candle light

We waited ....., and waited ....., and waited but the lights stayed off. Time to execute Plan E: Not to be out-manoeuvred by the 'monster' a cell phone came to the rescue, the awards were called and presented by the light from a cell phone. We had all the moves to out wit the 'freaky monster'!

After such a dynamic day all car owners and their guests pegged the event as the most memorable car show they had ever attended. We are not sure what we can do to top the 2013 show next year!
